A child's mind is not a container to be filled, but rather a fire to be kindled. -Dorothea Brande
SCAT club is an acronym for the Society of Creative and Aware Thinkers. This is a mentorship between myself and a small group of early adolescent children, with Nature as our primary teacher. We explore an array of ideas and activities inspired by the beautiful world around us, focusing our time on one in depth activity each day, as well as stories, songs, games, science, art & more, all woven together into an intricate tapestry of being: being a good human; being a good animal; being a good friend; BE-ing, in a good way. My goal is to cultivate a small group of kids who spend multiple seasons together and really get to go deep and share milestones and rites of passages together. I feel that as our young ones grow and approach adolescence, they become more and more vulnerable to the dominant culture and peer pressure and we risk losing them to the bigger world “out there.” My vision is that by creating a tight-knit peer group which is deeply rooted in the natural world, we empower our children to become the healers, leaders, thinkers and BE-ers of tomorrow.
